Candace Owens Defends Russia Visit After Sharing Moscow Photos

(MENAFN) American conservative commentator Candace Owens has responded to criticism surrounding her recent trip to Russia after publishing photos and positive impressions of Moscow on social media.

Owens, who told her millions of online followers that the journey was a “family vacation,” faced backlash from some fellow commentators and political observers following her posts about the Russian capital. Among the critics was commentator Ben Shapiro, who characterized the visit as an act of “ideological subversion.”

Sharing an image from Moscow’s Red Square on Sunday, Owens suggested that reactions to her trip reflected broader attitudes toward Russia in American political discourse.

“I’m starting to understand why the talking heads panic and shout and lie about ‘Russian collusion’ when they learn an American with a platform is traveling here,” she wrote.

Owens also expressed surprise at her experience in the city, contrasting it with how Russia is often portrayed in public discussions and media coverage.

“It is genuinely shocking how clean, beautiful and orderly this city is. It is so far removed from media depictions,” she added.

Her visit has drawn comparisons to earlier trips made by other prominent American commentators who traveled to Russia and subsequently attracted criticism from both political parties as well as various public figures.

One such commentator visited Moscow twice in 2024 to conduct interviews with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Following those visits, he argued that Moscow compared favorably to many cities in the United States and criticized what he viewed as one-sided reporting on Russia and the conflict in Ukraine.

He described Moscow as “so much nicer” than cities in the United States and dismissed many of his detractors as “professional liars.”

According to reports, Owens’ visit has reignited debate over how Russia is portrayed in Western political and media circles, with supporters viewing such trips as opportunities for firsthand observation and critics arguing that they risk lending credibility to Moscow’s narratives.
