Massive Avalanche Hits Sonamarg in Kashmir, No Casualties Reported
According to official accounts cited by reports, the avalanche struck Sonamarg—widely known as the Meadow of Gold—in the Ganderbal district of central Kashmir at approximately 10:12 p.m. Tuesday. CCTV footage circulating afterward showed heavy snow and debris surging into parts of the area, briefly engulfing several structures.
Officials said the incident did not result in any injuries or major property losses.
The avalanche came after authorities had issued an alert earlier in the week, warning residents and tourists about the risk of high-intensity avalanches as continuous snowfall affected the district and surrounding regions.
Meanwhile, transport links began to normalize as weather conditions improved. The Srinagar–Jammu Highway, a critical all-weather route connecting the region with northern India, reopened on Wednesday after being temporarily shut due to harsh conditions, according to traffic officials.
Avalanches remain a recurring danger in the Indian Himalayan region. Since 2021, such incidents have claimed the lives of more than 120 people, based on data cited by reports. In a previous incident in February 2024, an avalanche in Gulmarg—another major tourist destination—killed one Russian skier, while six others were rescued.
Much of Jammu and Kashmir experienced a renewed spell of snowfall and rain starting early Monday, which persisted through late Tuesday night. Weather conditions, however, began to improve on Wednesday and are expected to remain stable until the end of the month, before further precipitation is forecast to return in February.
