Trump Pushes for Tariffs on Russian Oil Importers
“We can raise tariffs on them very quickly,” Trump told journalists aboard Air Force One while traveling back to the White House from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
He specifically mentioned India, noting that Washington had doubled tariffs to 50% in August due to its oil trade with Russia, a practice the US strongly opposes.
Trump was accompanied by Senator Lindsey Graham, who elaborated on the legislative proposal. “India is now buying substantially less Russian oil,” Graham said, stressing that such purchases were sustaining Moscow’s “war machine.”
The president asserted that Russia’s economy, now entering its fourth year of war with Ukraine and under ongoing Western sanctions, was in “lousy” condition.
The Trump administration has framed its economic pressure on Moscow as part of efforts to secure an end to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. These efforts included a meeting last month in Florida between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Shortly after those talks, Russia accused Ukraine of launching a drone strike against a residence used by Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Novgorod region. Kyiv immediately rejected the allegations.
