Ukraine denies involvement in Black Sea tanker drone strike

(MENAFN) Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry on Tuesday rejected Moscow’s claims that it carried out a drone strike on a Russian tanker in the Black Sea, asserting that Kyiv had no connection to the incident and questioning the plausibility of the tanker’s reported route.

Spokesman Heorhii Tykhyi stated, "officially refutes any allegations of such kind made by Russian propaganda," emphasizing that the vessel’s alleged trajectory — traveling from Russia toward Georgia through Türkiye’s exclusive economic zone — “makes no sense” and suggested that Russia might have “staged the whole thing.”

Earlier, Russia’s River and Sea Transport Agency reported that the MIDVOLGA-2 tanker had been struck by an unmanned aerial vehicle at around 8 a.m. local time (0500 GMT) while navigating the Black Sea. According to reports, the tanker sustained minor structural damage but remained seaworthy and continued its journey toward the Turkish port of Sinop. No crew members were injured in the incident.

Türkiye’s Directorate General of Maritime Affairs also confirmed that the tanker had reported an attack approximately 80 nautical miles off Türkiye’s Black Sea coast and noted that all 13 crew members were unharmed as the vessel continued toward Sinop.
