Rubio Says Russia Must Play a Role in Peace Talks
He made the remarks following discussions in Florida with Ukrainian negotiators.
The delegation from Kiev, headed by senior security official Rustem Umerov, reviewed US President Donald Trump’s proposed peace plan during a session that also included the president’s peace envoy Steve Witkoff and informal adviser Jared Kushner.
Addressing reporters after the meeting, Rubio noted that while some progress had been achieved, “there’s more work to be done.”
He explained, “There are a lot of moving parts and obviously there’s another party involved here that’ll have to be a part of the equation and that’ll continue later this week when Mr. Witkoff travels to Moscow.”
Rubio further mentioned that the US has been communicating with Russian officials and possesses “a pretty good understanding” of Moscow’s stance.
Umerov described the discussions as “difficult, yet productive,” emphasizing that there was “tangible progress on the way to a just peace.”
Although some critics in Ukraine and Western countries have argued that Trump’s plan disproportionately favors Russia, the president asserted that the proposal was developed with input from both sides and subsequently “fine-tuned” during additional meetings earlier this month.
Ukraine has, however, rejected several of Russia’s central demands, including the withdrawal of Russian troops from the Donbass region and the formal recognition of its newly established borders.
