Rubio says Russia has to include itself in securing peace deal

(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Sunday that Russia will need to be “part of the equation” in negotiating a peace deal for Ukraine, following discussions in Florida with Ukrainian negotiators, according to reports.

The Ukrainian delegation, led by top security official Rustem Umerov, met with US President Donald Trump’s peace envoy Steve Witkoff and informal adviser Jared Kushner to review Trump’s proposed roadmap for ending the conflict. Rubio said that while progress had been made, “there’s more work to be done.”

“There are a lot of moving parts and obviously there’s another party involved here that’ll have to be a part of the equation and that’ll continue later this week when Mr. Witkoff travels to Moscow,” Rubio added. He noted that US officials have been in contact with Moscow and have “a pretty good understanding” of Russia’s position.

Umerov described the talks as “difficult, yet productive,” noting “tangible progress on the way to a just peace.”

Although Trump’s plan has faced criticism in Ukraine and the West for allegedly favoring Russia, the president maintains that it was developed with input from both sides and later refined in additional meetings earlier this month.

Ukraine has rejected several key Russian demands, including troop withdrawals from Donbass and recognition of new borders, while Russian President Vladimir Putin stated last week that a ceasefire is impossible as long as Ukrainian forces occupy parts of Russian territory.
