British foreign security acknowledges Turkey’s role in pushing regional stability

(MENAFN) British Foreign Secretary David Lammy acknowledged Türkiye's significant role in promoting regional stability and pushing for peace in the Russia-Ukraine conflict during a visit to Ankara on Monday. He emphasized Türkiye’s proactive stance in seeking a ceasefire and resisting Russian advances.

After meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Ankara, Lammy addressed reporters and shared that over the past year in his role, he had communicated with Fidan frequently. “I can safely say that in those 12 months in office, there has not been one month in which I have not met or spoken, often more than once, with Minister Hakan Fidan," he stated.

Lammy said this ongoing dialogue reflected the strength of bilateral cooperation and highlighted the cultural and social connections between the two countries. He mentioned that approximately five million UK citizens are expected to visit Türkiye this year, a sign of its popularity and the welcoming nature of its people. He also noted that many Turkish nationals travel to the UK as well.

He pointed out that his own parliamentary district is home to long-standing Turkish-speaking communities, remarking that "the relationship between the UK and Türkiye is underpinned by the strongest of strategic partnerships."

Lammy emphasized the mutual desire to expand collaboration, particularly through trade. He referred to the existing Free Trade Agreement as a foundational part of these efforts.

"We look forward to the negotiations over the coming weeks and months to get to that Free Trade Agreement," he said. He added, "that free trade agreement will be building on £28 billion ($38.4 billion) worth of trade...Having Turkish industry and business working in partnership, often located in the United Kingdom, is a testament to that strong business relationship, as well as that strong people-to-people relationship."

According to reports, this visit marks a continuation of steady diplomatic engagement between the UK and Türkiye, focused on both economic and geopolitical collaboration.
